This four-week series is for anyone who wants to learn to sew, sharpen, or expand their sewing skills. It's for complete beginners or those returning to sewing. We'll learn machines, tools, notions, materials, presser feet, and all the skills needed to complete a sewn project each week, building your skills and confidence.

Supply List
  • Sewing machine with power cord, foot control and accessories
  • Schmetz Microtex 80/12 or 90/14 needles
  • Book-School of Sewing by Shea Henderson (available at Meissner's)
  • Fabric scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Mettler 50 wt. cotton thread in a neutral color (white, off white or grey)
  • Empty bobbin
  • Students may want to bring a notebook and a pen for note taking (or to make notes in the margin of the book).

All fabrics and threads will be provided for the first two projects/classes.

As the class members learn about different tools, they will need to purchase items for their own sewing kit, and we'll talk about different available options so each class member can choose the items that will meet their needs.

The kit to assemble will include the following: rotary cutter, scissors, pins, a cutting mat, ruler(s), marking tool, pincushion, seam ripper, assorted notions for the final two projects, including fabric and interfacing. We will talk about what products listed below will be needed to complete the following week's project, so there is no reason to buy these items before the series begins.

Projects for Freshman Series:
