This four week series is the third of four for anyone who wants to learn to sew. The Junior series will build on what was learned in the prior two series, with a project being completed each week. Students will continue to build sewing skills and confidence, including making a lined tote and purse, installing interior zipper pockets, and straight line quilting.

Prerequisite: School of Sewing Freshman and School of Sewing Sophomore.

 

Class Supply List

  • Sewing machine with power cord, foot control and accessories
  • Book - School of Sewing by Shea Henderson (available at Meissner's)
  • A notebook and a pen for note taking (or making notes in the margin of the book).

Class members should bring the items in the sewing kit they created during the Freshman Class Series:

1. rotary cutter

2. scissors

3. pins

4. a cutting mat

5. ruler(s)

6. fabric marking pen

7. pincushion

8. seam ripper

9. assorted notions

10. Mettler 50wt. thread

11. bobbins

12. sewing machine needles (Schmetz 80/12 or 90/14)

13. hand sewing needle

Projects for the Junior Class Series:

Week 1: Carry All Clutch

1. 1/4 yard or one fat quarter of fabric for exterior

2. 1/4 yard or one fat quarter of fabric for lining

3. 1/4 yard of fusible fleece

4. 1/2 yard of Pellon 808 Craft Fuse

5. (1) 9" all purpose polyester zipper

6. 4" of 3⁄4" velcro or 1⁄2” -3⁄4” magnetic snap

7. (1) 1" D ring or swivel hook

Week 2: Pleated Purse

1. 1 1⁄2 yard exterior fabric (either quilting cotton or home dec fabric)

2. 1/2 yard of quilting cotton fabric for lining

3. 1 fat quarter or 1/4 yard quilting cotton fabric for interior pocket

4. 4 yards woven fusible interfacing: SF101 Shape Flex

5. 1.5" x 3" scrap of fusible fleece interfacing for snap reinforcement

6. 3/4-1” magnetic snap7. 9" or longer all purpose polyester zipper

Week 3: Placemat

1. 1 yard main fabric-100% cotton fabric only

2. 1 1⁄2 yard backing fabric-100% cotton fabric only

3. 3/4 yard binding fabric-100% cotton fabric only

4. 1 yard batting

5. safety pins (suggested curved pins, size 2)

6. fabric marking pen or hera marker

Week 4: Stitch n Flip Project

(not in book)-Journal cover, Casserole dish trivet, or Zipper bag.

1. Bring fabric scraps and batting scraps from prior classes and 50 wt thread.

If making the casserole dish hot pad/trivet, bring 1/3 yd of Insulbright.
